The Schechner Plays Festival is a multi-venue, multi-event festival in the fall of 2027 (exact dates tbd). The Festival will mark Schechner’s legacy of productions, academic boundary-breaking, and global exchange. Few have had such a far-reaching career as an author, theatre director, workshop leader, professor, and editor as Richard Schechner.

The Festival will feature productions, staged readings, panels, workshops, and films drawing on the recent 2025 publication of Schechner Plays, a collection of plays that Schechner wrote or helped devise.

The Schechner Plays Festival is a performed retrospective of Schechner’s creative and academic legacy which focuses on transmission: how these texts resonate today among diverse groups of artists many of whom have worked with Schechner.  The artistic director of the Festival is Yassi Jahanmir, an international theatre director, scholar, co-founder of the Tucson Fringe Festival, and one of Schechner’s former students.
